By 2014, the provincial, territorial and federal governments will have negotiated a new funding agreement for public health care, the 2014 Health Accord.

In the Accord we want to see public health care protected, strengthened and extended.

The Organizing and Administrative Assistant (O&A) is a new position at the Health Network as we move forward with campaigns plans for the 2014 Health Accord.

The O&A will assist the Provincial Coordinator by managing the Network’s administrative and financial records and assisting in political campaigns.

The job will involve a lot of phone calls to people you don’t know and an occasionally busy and stressful work environment.  The workload will be constant and fast-paced but you’ll also be given plenty of opportunities for skills building and networking. Management of the office will be the main task.


1.     Provides administrative support – 75%

a.     Manage the Health Network’s office, including filing, correspondence, travel arrangements for the Coordinator, maintains databases, keeps office tidy and presentable

b.     Ensure Health Network records and files are up to date

c.      Work with our bookkeeper and/or treasurer to maintain financial records

d.     Provide administrative support to local community contacts and local committees

e.     Maintain and update the Health Network’s website and other social media as required

f.      All other duties proscribed by the Executive

2.     Organizing – 25%


a.     Assisting with organizing rallies, info pickets, sit-ins and other demonstrations

b.     Growing a membership base of individuals and organizations



The ideal candidate will have:

a)    A demonstrated commitment to Public Health Care

b)   A strong activist background and knowledge of current social, political and economic affairs in Nova Scotia

c)    An understanding of Nova Scotia’s diverse population

d)   Very strong administrative skills

e)    Ability to manage financial records

f)     Experience working in a largely volunteer organization

g)    Capacity to work in coalitions with a wide array of organizations, opinions, and occasionally divergent goals.

h)   An understanding of community-based organizations and the labour movement in Nova Scotia

i)     Capacity to work in a self directed manner

j)     Basic computer, website and database management skills

Additional assets:

a)    Ability to speak French or another language

b)   Experience + knowledge dealing with the media (administratively; this position will not be a spokesperson for the organization)



Remuneration – The pay for this position is currently set at $18/hour for 14 hours per week.

Benefits package – To be negotiated through collective bargaining

Hours of work – While the hours are flexible, they must be daytime from Monday to Friday and include one full 7-hour day.

Review – There will be a job review after 6 months of hiring, followed by annual reviews thereafter.

Please Note: This funding for this position is only secure for three years.
